What's the difference between osteopathy & chiropractic?

What’s the difference between osteopathy and chiropractic? This is a question I receive more often than not from patients seeking pain treatment. I thought I’d explain a little here.

The Differences

The main difference is the origin of the profession and their histories. I won’t bore you with these. Since the origins of the professions long ago, much has changed. Research in best practices for manual therapy has progressed both professions. This has narrowed the differences between the osteopathy & chiropractic professions. You’ll find variety in the approach between osteopaths and chiropractors and within each profession.

Generally, you’ll find osteopathy takes a broader approach compared to chiropractors, who focus more on the spine. No one approach is better than another, and you must find a practitioner that suits you.

The similarities

Both professions are regulated and need registration with a governing body. This is at least 4 years of training for osteopaths with a minimum requirement of clinical hours. Chiropractors complete at least 3 years of training and 1 year under supervision. Meaning whichever profession you choose you are being cared for to a high standard.

Osteopaths and chiropractors are both trained in assessing and diagnosing your pain. This means you do not need a referral to see an osteopath or chiropractor. Both professions also have suitable methods for any issues that need onward referral.

Manipulation and mobilisation of joints are techniques used by both osteopaths and chiropractors. You’ll have likely seen these used on spinal joints, but are not limited to the spine. Osteopaths and chiropractors treat more than the back and neck. Shoulder, hip, knee, and ankle pain can all improve with osteopathic or chiropractic treatment.

Exercise alongside manual therapy has shown the best results in rehabilitating pain. This is important. As the forces applied through movement aid the healing process. Both osteopaths and chiropractors train in exercise prescription. All therapists including osteopaths and chiropractors should include some degree of rehabilitation advice. If this is being missed, I recommend you ask your therapist why.

I’ve covered the main difference and similarities between osteopathy and chiropractic treatment. I hope this has left you with a better understanding of both professions. This question is much easier to answer now that I work with a chiropractor at The Hive Health. The next time you are in pain I hope you can find the right practitioner for you.
